Coverstitching a Friday Pattern Company Adrienne Top - Jen Walker

I’ve been up to my old sewing tricks again, and really wanted to share this latest make with you. I have been  playing with the Coverstitch machine (model used is CV3550) again!


On a complete whim (before lockdown), I decided to swing by my local haberdashery, Backstitch, after I’d met with some local sewing buddies. One of the patterns one of my friends mentioned to me was the Friday Pattern Company Adrienne Top. Once we’d been chatting about it, I knew I just had to make one! So I picked up the pattern at Backstitch, and as luck would have it, they had this super gorgeous jersey in their remnants – and it was the exact amount required for the pattern! Lucky me!



I had to be very careful cutting this fabric out though, as the pattern is made up of tiny stripes. So I had to ensure it was nice and level. The cutting out did take a fair amount of time and patience. After this though, I was surprised at what a quick make it turned out to be. I saw the gathers and elastic and assumed it would be kind of complex. I needn’t have worried!

I used by Brother Innovis NV1300 to stitch the pattern pieces together and create the channels for inserting the elastic. I used the stretch stitch setting for this, and it worked a charm! Such an easy feature.



I do have to confess that the other reason I really wanted to make a jersey top was to have another play with my Brother coverstitch machine. It was already threaded up with navy blue thread from my last make, so it was really quick to just pop the machine up on my table and get sewing!



I used the hemming attachment for this (my second time using it). I pressed the hem of my fabric, in readiness for coverstitching. It was a little bit tricky, as this fabric kept curling up. So it took a bit of a fight to get it to behave, but it worked beautifully!



Et voila – yet another hem which looks as though it could have been spotted on a ready to wear garment. I am super happy! You can create a professional finish at home - how cool is that?!
